 '08 Draft Review:

Round 2 (47) - Trevor Laws, DT, Notre Dame
The Eagles traded out of the first round and then down a few more spots in the second before landing Laws, a smart, active DT from Notre Dame. He's very similar to current Eagles DT Mike Patterson. He'll likely be the first DT off the bench and help keep Patterson's and Bunkley's legs fresher.
Grade: C+

Round 2 (49) - DeSean Jackson, WR, California
DeSean Jackson is an electric kick and punt returner and a better receiver than Ted Ginn, who went #9 overall a year ago. Jackson will immediately improve the Eagles return game and could emerge as the Eagles fifth receiver, with the opportunity to move up even higher on the depth chart. His speed will allow the Eagles to stretch the field, opening up the middle of the field for the other receivers to work.
Grade: A

Round 3 (80) - Bryan Smith, DE/LB, McNeese State
Smith was a highly ranked DE on the small school circuit, but will be moved to OLB for the Eagles. He could challenge Akeem Jordan for the backup WLB position behind Omar Gaither, but will absolutely need to be a key contributor on special teams. This pick was probably a bit early and wasn't really a position of need for the Eagles.
Grade: F

Round 4 (109) - Mike McGlynn, OL, Pittsburgh
McGlynn was the leader of the Pitt O-line that featured Jeff Otah. McGlynn is a versatile player who could be plugged in at RT, OG, or even center. He plays with a bit of a mean streak and will be a good addition to an offensive line that has two aging tackles and questions on the interior.
Grade: B

Round 4 (117) - Quintin Demps, S, UTEP
Brian Dawkins had an off year in 2007 and is clearly winding down in his career. With Dawkins good for another year or two, Demps will have the opportunity to learn under one of the best. Demps is a ball-hawking safety who even has the speed and athleticism to play the corner position.
Grade: A

Round 4 (131) - Jack Ikegwuonu, CB, Wisconsin
Jack Ikegwuonu was one of the top rated corners entering the 2007 (his junior) season. Ikegwuonu did not play particularly well, but decided to declare for the draft anyway. During pre-draft training, he tore the ACL and MCL in his knee and will not be able to play in 2008. He also has ongoing legal concerns. The Eagles really reached for Ikegwuonu, despite the fact that Lito Sheppard remains an Eagle. Ikegwuonu will be placed in the IR for the season, essentially redshirting and hoping to get a roster spot in 2009.
Grade: D

Round 6 (184) - Mike Gibson, OL, California
Mike Gibson is a versatile offensive lineman who has played a number of positions along the line. His best fit in the NFL appears to be inside where he can utilize his strength and hide some of his lack of athleticism.
Grade: B-

Round 6 (200) - Joe Mays, LB, North Dakota State
Joe Mays is a smallish inside linebacker with marginal athleticism, but he's known as an aggressive player and big hitter. He excels against the run, but is a real liability against the pass. He's a special teams project at this point and poses no real threat to Stewart Bradley's starting role.
Grade: C-

Round 6 (203) - Andy Studebaker, DE/LB, Wheaton College
Andy Studebaker apparently caught the team's eye once his pro day workout was posted on YouTube. CDS was onto Studebaker for much longer than that. Studebaker is a big, athletic player who projects to SLB in the NFL. He's actually fairly similar to current Eagle Chris Gocong, who he'll likely be backing up in 2008.
Grade: B

Round 7 (230) - King Dunlap, OT, Auburn
Dunlap's rise and fall are well-documented. He was the heavily hyped LT who would step in for Marcus McNeill and the offense wouldn't miss a beat. He showed his inexperience as a junior and then played so poorly as a senior, he was benched in favor of a freshman. Still, Dunlap is nearly 6-9 and has decent athleticism for his size. The Eagles are taking a flier and hoping that he'll be a better pro than collegiate player.
Grade: C+

Summary:
The Eagles, once again, traded down, out of the first round, although this year they claimed a 2nd and 4th and also Carolina's 2009 first rounder. The rest of the draft was a bit hit or miss, with a number of missed opportunities to fill holes and address needs. The Eagles did trade a 4th round pick to Miami for RB Lorenzo Booker, a transaction that should pay dividends. The Eagles seemed to overdraft at the LB position, one of the few groups that was young and didn't seem to have any immediate needs.
Grade: C-
