Overview

Rivers teamed with Brian Cushing and Rey Maualuga to form one of the best and most feared linebacking cores in the country. All Pac-10 First Team in 2006 and 2007. Three year starter at linebacker for the Trojans.

Strengths

Rivers is a really intense player. Plays with a lot of passion. Thrives on making the big hit but never at the cost of a missed tackle. Excellent fundamentally at wrapping up the ballcarrier and driving him to the ground. Very consistent throughout the game. Has great height at 6-2 and is able to knock down passes. Especially good at playing the screen or quick slant routes. Very explosive and can break up well designed plays just by himself. Solid quickness and straight line speed. A highly motivated player who is known for his high work ethic and passion for the game. A sideline to sideline player, very active is backside pursuit plays. Tested incredibly well at his pro day, with a solid 4.5 40 and a 42 inch vertical.

Weaknesses

Makes himself easily blockable at times with poor angles and is impatient at letting the play develop. Below average at rushing the passer with only 5.5 career sacks.

Projection

His draft stock has boomed with great postseason workouts. I don't always see the hype about Rivers, he is a really solid linebacker, but lacks the potential of many other linebackers. Limited potential or not, he comes from a top notch program at USC, where nearly every linebacker taken(including players way less talented than Rivers) has been successful. Rivers should go in the top 15 of the first round, but the buyer must know that he will most likely not become a superstar at the next level.

BY FAR the most athletic LB in the 08 class, Rivers has great size combined with low 4.4 speed and playmaking ability, he'll be the 2nd LB off the board, and the 1st if Rey Maualuga stays, but I doubt that will happen. Rivers is a potential top 10 pick who will not fall out of the top 15, THE BEST SENIOR LB IN THE NATION!
