OverviewStewart has been one of the top runningbacks in the country ever since he arrived at Eugene. He was one of the highest ranked high school recruits coming out of Lacey, Washington. As a freshman in 2005, he led the NCAA in kickoff returns. As a starter at runningback in 2006 and 2007, he was one of the top runners in the country. First Team All Pac-10 in 2007.
StrengthsFreak of nature athlete. Combines incredible size for a runningback(5-10, 235 pounds) with good speed(4.48 combine 40 time). His strength is also unreal(had 28 reps of 225 at the combine, tops among all runningbacks). He frequently outlifts linemen. His power clean(402) is second on the all time Oregon list behind Ravens Nose Tackle and former top 15 selection Haloti Ngata. He also benches 410 pounds, the highest amount for a runningback ever at Oregon. Stewart runs well in between the tackles, has great vision and hits the hole fast. Great acceleration once into the hole and has a nice array of moves. Runs with power but also has quickness and agility. Tough on opposing blitzes, doing a very nice job of picking up his blocking assignments. A great goaline back with 27 touchdowns in 3 years. Solid hands out of the backfield, a good safety blanket for Quarterback Dennis Dixon this past season. A really good overall prospect.
WeaknessesIs known to cough the ball up at times. Tries to take on too many tacklers sometimes and opens his body to all sorts of unecessary injuries. Does not have an excellent second gear to break away from defenders once in the secondary. His toe injury lingers and still worries some scouts.
ProjectionStewart is the most complete back in this draft. McFadden is more flashy and has more stats, but I really feel the better NFL runningback will be Stewart. He has literally everything you would want in a runningback; power, speed, vision, playmaking ability. He even does all the little things well; blocking, receiving, goaline carries. Stewart will be a star in this league before long. However, a recent turf toe injury has limited him and will not allow him to workout until this summer. This injury has dropped him significantly to probably the middle of the first. An absolute steal there because he is top 10 talent.

Needs work on blocking in the backfield but will improve fast.Tremendous up-side. Steal the starting job from Alexander. User: Sprinkler Date/Time: 08/25/2007 - 6:10AM EDT Predicted Round: Round 2 Solid Running Back was top recruit coming out of high school. He runs a little too straight up relying on his power to beat opposing defenses, (something he won't be able to do against better competition). A little fumble prone and inconsistent, but could really shine this season. Rate This Player |
