OverviewAn incredibly dynamic WR for the Golden Bears. DeSean was a heisman candidate in the early part of 2007, before Cal's season unraveled. He was a 5 star prospect coming out of Long Beach Poly High School, and looked almost certain to be headed to USC, his childhood school. However, when a report leaked he was already committed to USC, he quickly changed his mind and on signing day committed to Cal. DeSean was named 1st team All Pac-10 in 2006 as a Wide Receiver and punt returner, and 2nd team in both in 2007. Also named 3rd team All American by the AP in 2007.
StrengthsDeSean is a playmaker in its purest form. An absolute touchdown machine, with 28 TD's in 36 games. He averaged 15 yards per catch in his career and over 16 yards per punt return. He may be the best punt returner I have ever seen, prompting teams to kick away from him in every game except the first game when he had an exhilarating 77 yard return against Tennessee. He finished with 6 career returning touchdowns in only 38 returns. His stats dramatically decreased in 2007 after a thumb injury hampered him all year. He also was a Pac-10 sensation and was only stopped when double teamed in the secondary. DeSean is incredibly quick, running a 4.35 combine 40 time. He is great at the screen pass, but he is best used on long routes with double moves, freezing the defender. Last year against Oregon, he run a stop and go route and completely fooled the DB, trotting into the endzone. Hands are almost 2nd to none, rarely ever drops a pass.
WeaknessesDeSean has very few weaknesses. He does however sometimes lose focus in a game, or get too into the oppenent. Can be a little too cocky, and can taunt the crowd excessively. Always shows up in big games, but has a tendency to not show up for smaller lesser games which aren't as big or hyped. Measured in at only 5-10, 2 inches shorter than he was listed at Cal, his height now has to be a concern.
ProjectionWith a great combine, DeSean looks to have solidified himself in the top 20. He is a playmker and burner type WR who can also make a huge contribution returning punts. No one loves his small frame, or his overly used mouth, but everyone loves him. He works very hard on his game, and should work even harder in the NFL to prove the doubters wrong. Should be taken in the top 15.
