OverviewMike is a Southeast HS grad (Bradenton, FL) grade who was named a SuperPrep All-America as a safety. Mike was also rated the 27th player in Florida by the Orlando Sentinel. He was also named to the First team Class 3A all-state team The Sarasota Herald Tribune selected Jenkins as its Defensive Player of the Year, and he was the District Player of the Year in 2002 after he had 42 tackles, two interceptions, one caused fumble, one fumble, two blocked punts and two blocked field goals. Mike also played running back and led the team with 859 yards and 11 touchdowns. At USF, Mike played quite a bit--splitting time between S and CB--throughout his true freshman season in 2004, although he was slowed somewhat by an ankle injury. In 2005, he was named 2nd team all Big East after putting up 38 tackles and 2 picks while starting all 12 games at corner. In '06, he again started everygame and had 16 passes defended with a pick. Mike has been a solid shut-down corner for the Bulls, being a solid contributor for 3 seasons. We DO NOT think he is top 10 material (as do some) and he would have benefitted from another year of college. Measured more than an inch shorter than expected at the Combine, but ran well and did 18 bench reps.
StrengthsDeceptive. Disguises what he is going to do until the last second, then jumps routes. Equally comfortable in bump-and-run or man coverage. Good size/speed ratio. Excellent recognition skills. Can shut down almost any collegiate receiver in one-on-one coverage, and was thus avoided like the plague by opposing QBs the past two years. Decent run support ability as well. Functional speed, and very adequate recovery ability.
WeaknessesNot all that polished yet. Not as physical as you would like. Inconsistent. Needs to mature a bit more both physically and mentally. More track fast than football fast. Elite skill set, but lacks elite production to back it up. Not a high character guy.
ProjectionLooks like a 3rd rounder to CDS, but we tip our hat to others who say he has first round ability, and give him a second-round grade.

User: DWeber99 Date/Time: 08/14/2007 - 5:38PM CDT Predicted Round: Round 3 Fastest DB at USF. Doesn't get picks because no one would throw at him in '06. Tough tackler, with good NFL size. Can play man-to-man or zone. Might have some return value, depends on if he wins USF's PR competition this summer. Rate This Player |
