Bruce Eugene started each of his four years at Grambling, although he was lost in the first game of the 2004 (junior) season with an ACL injury. In his Grambling career, Eugene threw an amazing 133 TDs with only 36 interceptions in addition to nearly 13,000 passing yards (in only three full seasons). He capped it all off with a 56 TD and 6 INT senior campaign where he threw for 4408 yards. In addition to those gaudy passing numbers, Eugene also rushed for nearly 1200 yards with 18 touchdowns.
Eugene has an outstanding arm. He can throw all the passes and has a cannon to make the deep throws, although he does have a bit of a wind-up motion. When the receiver is not open or the blocking breaks down, Eugene is mobile enough to scamper around the pocket to buy time. He also runs the ball reasonably well, although he looks a bit like an oversized fullback (undersized guard?) as he tucks the ball away. Despite his size, he can make people miss and has good feet. Eugene is also the consummate team leader. He's a take charge type in the huddle and the players respond well to him. You won't find another QB who is as much a student of the game. Eugene spends an amazing amount of time in film study. Coach Spears recognizes Eugene's understanding of the game and allows the QB to call many of the plays in the huddle. How many other college (or pro) QBs can make that claim?
Eugene, of course, did most of this against 1-AA competition (his only loss of 2005 came against 1-A Washington State and he did not have a great day) and also had a great offense to work with. He threw out of the shotgun nearly all the time as well. Eugene also needs to overcome a weight problem in order to have a shot at the NFL. Following his lost junior season, he reportedly showed up at spring practice weighing well over 300 pounds. He managed to drop the weight to about 290 to begin the season and is currently around 250. Even 250 wouldn't be a problem if he was 6' 4" or more, but he is just a hair over 6-foot even.
Because of his intelligence and production, Eugene will get a shot to make a roster. He's a possible late round pick, but more likely an UDFA.
