Bristol Olomua was a highly regarded prep out of Mesa, Arizona (Red Mountain HS), where he broke Arizona state records for receptions (195) and touchdown receptions (42). He was named to the first team 5A all-state team, and also received all-state honors for basketball while in high school. He saw some game action his first season at BYU, and then he did mission work the following two years, one of them being his redshirt year. He trasnfered to Texas Tech in 2003, and began playing with the team in the 2004 season. He regained the form that garnered him such praise as "the top tight end in the west", and set career highs in catches, yards, and touchdowns in an offense that doesn't feature the tight end. He continued at about the same level his final season, and still has some upside at his age.
Olomua has tremendous size for a tight end. He is very tall and give a quarterback a wide target in the middle of the field. He has above average speed at his size, and has the ability to stretch the field between the hashmarks. He can adjust to the ball in the air and leap to get it at its highest point with very soft hands. Excellent athletic ability for a player his size, he could be a matchup nightmare. Olomua isn't a playmaker, and he tends to go down on initial contact. At his size you would expect him to lower his shoulders and bowl over defenders, but he doesn't seem to want to run after the catch. Run blocking is one of his strongest suits, showing a tenacity and drive to move the defender off the point of attack. He is an aged prospect, and will need to show improvement quickly to make an NFL roster.
2006 NFL Draft Outlook
Bristol Olomua will be one of the more intriguing tight end prospects on draft day. His measurables are very desireable, but his lack of production and toughness could scare some teams off. I still feel that he is a solid day two prospect.
