While Ronald Bartell was garnering all the headlines in the Bison secondary in 2004, Antoine Bethea was quietly the most consistent defensive back. This year he will be on many All-American teams and rightly so. Bethea is a smart and aggressive player who, despite his diminuitive size, supports very well against the run as well as being a very solid pass defender.
Bethea made his first college start a memorable one with 10 tackles, 1 sack, 3 fumble recoveries and a 26-yard fumble recovery return for a touchdown in Howard's tough 17-14 MEAC loss to Hampton. Bethea's touchdown tied the game at 7-7 in the second period. Bethea, who had 8 solo tackles, and his defensive teammates forced 5 Pirate turnovers to keep the game close. Bethea was selected as the MEAC defensive player of the week. He is rather like Travis Fisher, though he lacks that kind of top-end speed. With a good showing at the combine, running a 4.39 40, Bethea may have solidified himself a spot on day two of the 2006 NFL Draft.
