CDS Profile
Andrew Whitworth toyed with the idea of declaring himself for the 2005 NFL Draft last winter, but his teammates and coaches couldn't have been happier when he decided to return for his senior season. Whitworth is a stalwart at the left tackle position. He combines long arms, good technique, and a powerful punch to keep pass rushers at bay, although he can be beat by the better speed rushers because he doesn't have outstanding quickness or footwork.
There are few run blockers as consistent and effective as Whitworth. With his great strength he devours would-be tacklers and opens wide holes for his talented running backs. He gets into defenders quickly, locks them up, and drives them home. One of the best aspects of Whitworth's game is his durability. He's started 52 straight games for the Tigers, which set a record at the school, maybe also the nation (can anyone confirm or deny this?). Whitworth is a leader on the offense and is a hard-worker on and off the field.
Whitworth will be among the headliners of a strong class of offensive tackles in the 2006 NFL Draft. Because of the depth of the position, and Whitworth's lack of real upside in the NFL, he will likely slide into the second round before hearing his name called. But a team with a power running game will get themselves a tackle that will be a front line starter for many years.
