"Maddox is one of the leaders of our football team and has been since his sophomore season," said head coach Chuck Amato. He plays our "hidden linebacker" position and he's certainly got the mentality of a linebacker - he's tough," said Amato. "If you get tackled by Andre Maddox, you'll feel it later." Coach Amato has good reason to gloat over Maddox, his numbers are mind-boggling, he produced 284 career tackles with 15 tackles for loss and 13 broken up passes. Last year alone (2003) he made145 tackles, two sacks, 10 tackles for loss, and six broken up passes. He earned All-ACC honors last year and should be in the mix for All-America mention this season. He might earn ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors and will be leading candidate for the Thorpe Award. He is a terror against the run and hits like a linebacker. He has been clocked at 4.46 in the forty and coupled with his size, should make the NFL scouts drool. His only weakness is in coverage. He has difficulty when the ball is in the air and gets out quicked by little receivers sometimes. A terrific strong safety, if he improves his ball skills he will have excellent NFL potential.
